What is the difference between who we are and who we think we are? From my perspective it feels like it might as well be a canyon sized gap. We all have blind spots that prevent us from seeing the truth, but is there “a truth”? On one hand our “friends can see our strengths and our enemies our weaknesses” and both maybe true to some extent, but the missing link that any outside opinion has are the emotions, motivations and thoughts that drive us internally. Ones which only we ourselves are aware of, unless we are talking about subconcious drives which muddy the waters even further. So we have some missing information from both of these internal and external sources. If we were to combine both insights, we might come closer to some kind of truth.
It’s easy enough to admit that our actions determine who we are but we cannot ignore or deny the fact that consequences don’t always line up perfectly with our intentions. Grey areas exist, which is why the legal system recognizes intentions with charges like “manslaughter” which describes a person who is unintentionally responsible for the death and demise of another human being. Of course this is an extreme example. So what matters more? Our actions or their consequences? On one hand somebody who steals to survive is still committing a crime, but they are understandably doing what they can to survive. A social media influencer who brags about donating to a charity, but for the sake of their ego and public image? Did the money still help? Of course! Are consequences and intentions equal? Is one more important than the other or are they both important?
I don’t have anything profound to say regarding this subject, I just wanted to remain consistent in my writing and found this to be on my mind for some reason. If you like what I do and want to support me, please consider donating to my BuyMeACoffee page!
